Planting Guide
For successful growth of your own squash, follow these instructions:
- These squash seeds favor warm soil and full sunlight. They are frost-sensitive.
- Sow seeds in fertile soil where squash has not been planted for the past 2 years.
- Plant 1 to 2 seeds in mounds 4 to 5 feet apart and cover with an inch of fine soil. Firm lightly and maintain even moisture.
- Expect seedlings to emerge in 10 to 14 days.
- When seedlings have developed 2 sets of leaves, thin to one plant.
- Given their shallow roots, mulch aids in preserving soil moisture and temperature. Keep soil humid, but not soaked, and water well throughout the growing season.
Harvesting Guide
Harvest your Early Prolific Straightneck Summer Squash easily with these guidelines:
- Reap the fruits in 46 to 52 days when they are small and the skin is glossy.
- To keep the squash producing, pick all fruit at this stage. Avoid letting the fruit mature as this could inhibit further yield.
- Gently twist the fruit until it snaps off. Ensure regular harvesting.
- Keep in plastic bags in the refrigerator for up to a week.
- Male squash blossoms are a delightful sweet treat. Try battering and frying them!
